Bang and no gears Empty Bang and no gears

Hi, tonight I was returning home driving off from traffic lights when I heard a loud bang and the gears would not engage. I can put the car the car in all the gear positions but it just revs. There was no smoke or smell. Has anybody had a similar situation. Car left on roadway. I will have to arrange an uplift tomorrow.
