Car alarm randomly activates
Only owned my Wind 1.2GT line for 5 days but alarm randomly activates. I’ve replaced batteries in both key fobs as this appeared to be a common cause of the problem but it’s made no difference. Any suggestions gratefully received

Possibly a cell faulty in the battery the car will still start but if only on short runs the alarm will drain the battery. Had mine changed last year they are only supposed to last 5 ish years mine was orignal and had lasted 8.

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
Renault alarms can give a lot of bother. While the alarm came as standard they were not factory fitted but instead were fitted by Renault uk when the cars arrived in the country, usually at the docks. Some of the more common causes can be a faulty or sensitive motion sensor, a drop in battery surge or dampness around the main alarm wiring loom connector in between the boot panels. But there can also be a fault with the alarm switch fitted under the bonnet - if the switch is not closing enough and it can set off the alarm. The 2 easiest things you can try is to remove any air fresheners that are hanging inside the car. Secondly use something like the thin pad you would put on the leg of a chair to make sure the bonnet switch is closing sufficiently. If you cant find the switch under the bonnet or dont see what i am talking about let me know and i will post a photo.

Many thanks for the information. I’m going to get the battery checked tomorrow just to make sure it’s not coming to it’s end of life and will see how things go. In the meantime will check the bonnet switch....as the car is very new to me, any chance of the photo as I’m still finding my way round things.many thanks indeed for the above.Mistydogblue wrote:Renault alarms can give a lot of bother. I also have an original 2011 battery. So far it's showing acceptable static & cranking voltages.Barbs wrote:Possibly a cell faulty in the battery the car will still start but if only on short runs the alarm will drain the battery. Renaulr were not the only manufacturer to dockside fit alarms which met UK standards. My 2001 Alfa Spider also had problems.

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
The plunger is on the front of the engine compartment and the other half is on the bonnet. Trying to include photos but not that easy

)many thanks for the photos.managed to find my way round under the bonnet.Tried some felt padding on the bonnet sensor unit but this didn’t work.Eventually took the car to a diagnostic centre but they couldn’t find any problems when the system was connected up. They have suggested a better battery as mine has a Lion battery , which I’ve since heard from more than one source, can be problematic. The garage have “ Loaned” me the new battery to see if this resolves the issue . hopefully it will. If not ,they will refit my Lion battery if I want it and just charge me for the diagnostics. In that case, the car will have to go to a Renault dealer.Watch this space and thank you again.

Update.New battery fitted and all was well for 5 days. . Suddenly, back to the same problem, having spent £200 on diagnostic/new battery. Can’t decide whether or not to take car to main Renault dealer or a car alarm specialist. Not enjoying owning this car right now.....

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
I would be tempted to get it disconnected. Nobody pays any attention to a car alarm going off anyway...

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
You probably already have realised this, but if you intend to disconnect the siren....it's located in the boot..above the reversing light....rather than under the bonnet. Always thought that it's location was a bit weird..but I guess that a French peculiarity of the car !!

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
Thanks for the suggestion and location to disconnect the alarm. Think it’s my only option rather than facing more diagnostic bills from garages only to be told they can’t find a fault.

Re: Car alarm randomly activates
The easiest way to access it is by removing the plastic panel inside the boot where the lock plate and boot interior light are. The alarm is then in the gap between the inner and outer skins of the back panel.

Just disconnected it, it started going off at 3 month intervals, thats okay just embarrassing when you have drive home through the country with the alarm blaring. Then recently it went off everytime you opened the drivers door! Looking to getting a better alarm fitted.

Hi, yes finally disconnected it. Pointless taking it anywhere else, spending another couple of hundred on diagnostics to be told there is no fault registering!Andyk wrote:For info. Random alarm.
Here is an interesting (to me anyhow) bit of data I read a few years ago. I had a Prius (automatic driving instructor) and my alarm would go off at home every now and then. What I discovered is that the alarm sensor detects a drop in battery power (not the big drive battery but the 12v battery in the back when say a door is opened and the dome light comes on without the car being legitimately opened. I found that if I'd left my phone or a tablet on in the car the alarm would go of and when I removed it/them it didn't go off. This would mean that whatever sensor was sensoring could pick up the battery from the mobile/tablet and as it drained set the alarm off. All I know for sure was no more problems ever after that.
Last night my alarm in my Wind went off twice. Lo and behold my mobile and tablet were on the passenger seat... forgotten to bring them in. No problems after that.

My neighbours installed a new doorbell and every time I unlocked my Wind (yup that sounds so wrong!) their doorbell would go off and when someone rang their bell my alarm went off.... took a while to work out and then they changed the doorbell setting and problem solved.
