Halfords carried out an Air Conditioning Pre Service Inspection (£39.99), only for me to learn I have a damaged A/C condenser.

And guess what - a quick search confirms that 'a damaged A/C condenser cannot be repaired and must be replaced.'

It is also said that 'you can expect that you will get 8-10 years of use from your AC compressor' .

Anyone  else had this misfortune lol?

The a/c on my red one packed in a few years ago. I got the local garage to look at it and they basically said it was knackered and couldn’t be serviced. That was as technical as it got and I didn’t persue it. Now the red one is definately a keeper and I’m thinking about getting it done. Have you had a quote?

Hi - Halfords said the labor alone would be £320. And I read elsewhere that £600 wasn't unreasonable 'all-in' - but that depends on the car of course. So although I haven't had a full quote, I expect it wont be too far off that price.
Then again, nothing much is cheap these days.
I expect  I'll think it over between now an next summer...

Hi,

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to find a part number for the condenser. Several come up in searches. Apparently there's a 101HP car and a 102HP car and they take different parts. It was news to me.

Did either of you ever get this done?

Never got mine done. But would at the price above. In fact at that price, it would be worth the purchase until I can find someone to fit it cheap.
Keep us posted :-)

Wonder what's best usage to improve life. Manually overriding (fiddling!) or relying on the manufacturers auto settings.

The only thing I over ride on my 1.6's Auto Air Con is the air flow which I do have set to screen & footwell all the time whilst all other functions look after themselves.
Apart from an occasional demist it stays like this all year round.

My approach to Auto Aircon is similar to my approach to automatic transmission. You've paid good money for it so let it get on with it.

Regardless of what settings you use I would recommend running the aircon for a short time once a week even in winter. Most die because they don't get used in winter. The gas has a lubricant in it and if not used seals dry out and the compressor can seize up.

The condenser is the first radiator you see if you look through the front grill. It is in front of the water radiator.

This is quite a good video on the parts and how it works. Hope it helps.
