Blowing exhaust. Empty Blowing exhaust.

Post by Araf Sun 12 Apr 2015 - 19:46

I've known for a while that my exhaust has been blowing, so as it was a little nicer today than it has been for a long while, I got the car up in the air to have a look.

The middle silencer has an inch long split along the seam. Anyone else had this, and what do you think my chances of getting Renault to cough up for a replacement are?

Not think Renault would cover all the cost perhaps a contribution. But you will have to have a good argument.

Also won't be sorted quickly. Based on readers letters in Auto Express for various problems raised by readers.

How much is an exhaust for the Wind?

No idea for genuine, but as the split silencer is on the long part with two boxes, a replacement from K-Tec is probably around £400.

My argument would be that it's a manufacturing defect as it's split along a seam. Frankly, getting the split welded locally is going to cost less than the petrol to get to the nearest dealer, so I think that's what I'll do.

Lets hope you get it sorted. Is it the same exhaust as a Twingo

I'm still on the original exhaust and lots of miles done, don't know if that part of the exhaust is the same on the 1.2 though. Prob is a manufacturing fault but is it worth the buggeration factor to pursue Renault? Welding sounds like a good line of least resistance!

The 1.2 has only a cat and a catback.
The 1.6 has center silencers in between. Cheapest would be getting it welded or search on 133.net for someone selling the exhaustline from his Twingo 133.

Welder's not wanting to weld, as he says the metal is so thin and he might blow a hole in it. I might have a go at repairing it myself, but agree that a s/h exhaust would be the best bet - though most people seem to cut them in half, when they take them off. Rolling Eyes

What about a reclamation yard we used to depollute and crush but I still get calls for parts from cars. Being a petrolhead Araf, you may of heard of Motorhog that's where I tell people to look now for bits you have to buy the car but the rest is scrap. Ok not much metal in a Wind but ...

Well, looking back through, I fixed it last year with bathroom sealant  Shocked but didn't tell you.  My reasoning is that as silicone sealant is often used for assembling exhausts, it would be fine for such a thin split.

It's now started blowing again, so I'll have to get my sealant gun out again.  Smile

The first posts were from a year ago.  I decided then not to go down the 'dealer' route.

Funny you should say that.  I mentioned to Mrs Araf that I might need a new tube of sealant, and she suggested I re-caulk the bathroom, so that I don't waste the rest of it. Sad

That's what I like to see Mrs Araf making sure you can't get into more mischief buying more cars.....
