The Law on roof closing locations

Post by colin565 on Tue 18 Aug 2015 - 23:27

When you are driving with the roof opens and it rains, what do you do?

If you are on a A or B road do you grin and bear it till you find a layby or keep driving?

What abut on a long Motorway with nearest service station located a long distance away?

Is it permissible to stop on the hard shoulder to put the roof up?

I got caught in a cloudburst, and thought that like other cars, speed would keep the water out.

How wrong I was.  The water moved up the screen, across to the corners, then poured in on anyone inside.  Saturated in no time at all.

I'd pull onto the hard shoulder, and if questioned by the BIB would argue that water getting in my eyes could cause an accident, so stopping to put the roof up was an emergency. Smile

Yeh, I suppose it could be argued that it is a safety reason that you are stopping on a motorway hard shoulder, if you find it hard to see with rain water in your eyes.

Would not like to put it to the test though,

I bet everyone knows my answer! I've shared Araf's rivulets pouring over the edges of the screen many times. I've had rainwater sitting an inch deep on the passenger seat as ive been driving along. Proves the stitching on the leather seats is up to scratch though. Hailstones at 70mph though are the worst...

There are quite a lot of bendy B roads lined with trees up here, with no stopping places for miles, and I was behind a tourist in a Merc SLK his roof down, but with my knowledge of weather up here, I had put my roof up earlier.

Poor sod got a real soaking before he could pull in. It was fun watching him squirm looking for a place to get his roof up as his interior got soaked. I am so cruel Very Happy

PS...Barbs take note of changing weather on your road trip.

Knebby..... good to know the seats hold out in a downpour
Have not put it to such a test (yet).

Remember to stop off to see the Kelpies horse statues, next to Grangemouth/Falkirk. And also the Falkirk wheel, at (errm!) Falkirk Very Happy

Those Kelpies do look impressive hope they haven't caused any accidents, I know when the Angel of the North went up there were a few accidents as it just appears in front of you.
