Oil Leak I think

Post by Huw (Barry The Renault) on Mon 6 Jul 2015 - 21:42

Car serviced by dealer Nov 2014. Oil changed. July 2015 practically empty of oil. Pro done less than 5k miles in that period.
I hope its just a seal or something, certainly no signs of burning elsewhere. I had noticed patches of oil under the car where I park,  just assumed it could not be my lovely Wind .
Got it booked in with the dealer for a health check next week.
Will let you know what they find. I'm not competent enough to assess it for myself.
PS. hi to everyone. Sorry I've not been on for a while.

It would be unusual to lose that amount of oil - though when you say 'practically empty' do you mean that it's only just showing on the dipstick? If so, there will be lots still in there. Min to Max will only be a litre, at most.

Was it Renault that serviced it?

Yeah was a Renault dealer who did the service.

My bet is that they didn't fill to the upper limit, or you've checked it before it's all drained to the sump, or the car has been on a slight slope.

Turn the car around, leave it for 10 minutes, then check it again.

If it was a Renault dealer, then they wouldn't of skimped by using the same washer. They would have replaced that. Smile

Update. Leak was due to the seal on the oil filter. As the dealer fitted the filter at the last service, they fitted a new filter and filled up with oil without charge. I guess I'm pretty please with the result, but I'd rather not have had the problem.

Could easily have been a duff seal on the filter cartridge, forgetting to smear the seal with oil before fitting, or just ham-fisted fitting. Either way, it's nice of them to rectify their fault, clean the under side of your car, and also pay for your driveway to be cleaned. Wink
