Spare Wheel Empty Spare Wheel

Post by Barbs Mon 30 Mar 2015 - 12:51

Just a thought in case anyone didn't know. It is possible to fit a full size spare wheel in the car. Mine came with a space saver think the other option was the gloop but after having to drive on the A1 with the spare wheel speed restrictions. Araf advised me with a little modification the car can fit in a full size spare wheel. If you trim the little plastic lip near the bottom of the panel it will fit in, The carpet sits a little raised but not that noticeable.

I bought a Clio 14 inch steel wheels and some steel wheel bolts off EBay, the wheel fits the hole nicely, the car on the other hand it only fits the rear so if we pick up a front puncture it will be a double wheel roadside swap

it is just a little trim on the plastic bit that allows a 17 inch wheel to fit in. Carpet raised a bit but not that you would notice

Think I was lucky Araf sold me one. Had a puncture on the way back from Scotland a couple of years ago. Fitted the space saver, restriction of 50 mph was scary.

A 15" wheel goes over the front brakes Anthony.  If you get a 15" alloy, you don't need to carry spare bolts. Smile

Got the space saver, but luckly never had to use it (yet, touch wood).

Anything is better than goo and compressor, as thats never guarenteed 100% effective, whereas a spare gets you away and running again.

That is so true. Driving on the space saver was so scary. I don't drive fast but think people see it's a roadster and expect you to drive fast. I am not comfortable with a car up my exhaust so the full size spare is a good alternative for me. Also having that I can shop around for the best price if faced with needing a replacement. Living in a City you don't always think about how easy it is to replace a tyre.

I could indeed do that but then it ain't too much of a hardship to do a double swap it a front puncture gets picked up

I quite agree.  The chances of a puncture are pretty slim anyway, so it's not as if you're going to be doing it every week. Smile

Hmm, a couple of years back in the Wind I went over an unmarked and unilluminated pedestrian crossing in a pitch black evening with a storm raging. The result was offside punctures front and rear. In those circumstances it doesn't matter whet size spare you've got or whether it's a bottle of goo, you ain't gonna get home without help. RAC recovery came to the rescue.
